65 Day Summer Semester Course

65 Day Summer Semester Course Description Through instruction and training, practical application and feedback, the Summer Semester Course is designed to give you the cutting edge needed to enter the exciting outdoor job market. This course is the one stop deal if you are serious about beginning a new career. Course components include: Backpacking, Rock Climbing Seminar, Mountaineering Course, Mountaineering Expedition (two summit objectives), Small Group Expedition, 9 day Wilderness First Responder Course, a Homestay, and Volunteer / Internship Work with a local tourist agency. Graduates from the semester will receive job placement assistance and recommendations, pending on performance.
 
 
Itinerary

Day 1. - Pick up in Lima, Private Transport to Huaraz (approximately 8 hours)

Day 2. - Orientation to Course, Overview of Curriculum, Tour of Huaraz, Gear Check / Sorting, Settling in...

Day 3. - Acclimatization Day Hike, Class on Altitude in the evening

Day 4 through Day 17. - Backpacking Expedition. Daily Lessons on backcountry campcraft, map & compass navigation, outdoor cooking, leadership & client care, as well as photography and natural / cultural history

Day 18 through Day 23. - Rock Seminar. We’ll set up a basecamp and dedicate 5 days to learning knots, anchors, belay management, and climbing techniques. Students should come away with the confidence and skill to safely run an institutional rock-climbing site. Individual interest in other areas of the sport will also be catered to

Day 24 through Day 25. - Rest Days! Back to Huaraz for two days off

Day 26 through Day 34. - Wilderness First Responder Course. An intense 9 days of First Aid Training

Day 35 through Day 36. - Rest Days and/or Survival Spanish Option, 4 hours per day both days

Day 37 through Day 39. - Homestay. In groups of two, stay for three days with a local family. Learn about integrating with a foreign culture, share your culture, and catch a glimpse of the beauty and power of the high Andes people

Day 40. - Food buy and Gear preparation for the Mountaineering Course.

Day 41 through Day 45. - Mountaineering Course. Head up to a glacier, set up a basecamp, and dedicate the next 5 days to learning glacier travel, self arrest, snow & ice anchors, belay systems, crevasse rescue, ice climbing, and more...

Day 46. - Preparation for Mountaineering Expedition

Day 47 through Day 54. - Summit Attempts. Head to the mountains for 2-3 alpine climbs

Day 55. - Rest Day

Day 56 through Day 58 Internship / Volunteer Work. An opportunity to see adventures tourism in action, in an area that largely relies upon it for it’s economic livelihood

Day 59 through Day 63. - Small Group Expeditions. In small groups, choose your own adventure and make it come true. Be it backpacking, travelling, rock climbing, or an additional summit bid, from start to finish you realize your own expedition ideas.

Day 64. - Debrief of Expeditions, Final Assessment / Exam Day

Day 65. - One on one interviews with instructors, gear deissue, final graduation banquet!


Note - Transportation back to Lima is each student’s own responsibility and will vary depending upon each individual’s post-course plans. Skyline Adventure School will help alumni arrange bus tickets to wherever they would like to go if need be. The official course end will be day 65.

· Solid hiking boots (crampon compatible unnecessary)
· 4 pairs of warm wool or synthetic socks
· 4 pair of cotton socks
· Pair of comfortable camp shoes
· 1 pair of in town shoes
· 2 pairs of thermal polypro (or equivalent) mid weight long underwear tops and bottoms
· 1 light fleece top
· 1 midwieght fleece top and bottom
· 1 down or synthetic jacket with hood
· Gore-Tex or equivalent outer shell jacket and pants
· 1 pair of Gore-Tex shelled gloves
· 2 pair of removable fleece glove liners

Criteria

This course is designed for individuals who are serious about working in the outdoor field. Prior to the course students must be:
· In good physical shape (able to run 2 miles in 18 minutes)
· Pass a doctor’s physical exam and have consent
· Over 18 years of age (physically and emotionally)
· Motivated to learn and push themselves
· Capable of assuming the responsibilities of independent overseas travel
· Willing and able to abide by the rules set by the school (see school rules)
· Previous outdoor skills preferred but not necessary.

School Rules

Grounds for termination.
The Skyline Adventure School reserves the right to terminate any student’s participation in a course if he/she is unable to agree to and abide by the following:
· Possession or the use of illegal drugs or drug related paraphernalia.
· Zero tolerance of unsafe, abusive, disorderly behavior.
· Consuming alcohol while in the field or during school hours.
· Breaking any law set by the Peruvian government.
· Students are obligated to attend all classes except those deemed -optional- by the instructors. In town rest days, however, can be used as each student pleases.

Town Days and Rest Days

You are obligated to attend all classes except those deemed "optional" by the instructor(s) if you plan to remain on the course. However, your "rest days" are for you to plan and do as you please.
